Biodiversity in the Trellech United Community

We are very fortunate to live in an area rich in environmental diversity: we have woods, meadows and rivers and many of them are well-managed and cared for. We have voluntary groups who are invested in managing footpaths and clearing areas of non-native species, such as Himalayan Balsam and Monmouthshire Meadows, who have increased our hay meadow flowers, grasses and insects by their careful management of the land.

There are, however, many areas that are in decline and we have seen an influx of diseases in our trees, leading to increased felling and the number of species of birds, insects and animals is falling year by year. Not every landowner takes care of the environment, and we need to see more people adopting better strategies for safeguarding and improving our biodiversity for the future. This is an urgent task.

Trellech United Community Council has committed to the following:

  • Managing our landholdings so as to increase biodiversity
  • Take into account biodiversity when considering planning applications
  • Enabling local groups to better increase their biodiversity by giving grants
  • Disseminating information to residents so that they can better care for their environment and help halt biodiversity loss by holding events and workshops
  • Reviewing our progress each year against the objectives laid out in our S6 report.
